If you are planning on a walk in the hills, you should carry these with you. They are small enough to keep in a rucksack or a jacket pocket. The main thing is to remove them as soon as you spot them, to minimize the risk of limes disease.

We are selling these items at an introductory price of £4.50.

Road Safety – Phone Use While Driving

I still see drivers using phones when driving. Basically put, it is illegal to hold a phone when driving. See the advise from Gov.uk

“It’s illegal to hold and use a phone, sat nav, tablet, or any device that can send or receive data, while driving or riding a motorcycle.

This means you must not use a device in your hand for any reason, whether online or offline.”

You can, of course, use a phone via your car’s hands free system, but even then I would only do this if I absolutely had to.

Road Safety – Zebra Crossings

I see people, in particular drivers, who quite simply, do not know how to use a Zebra Crossing.

The Highway Code states “Drivers and riders should give way to pedestrians waiting to cross and MUST give way to pedestrians on a zebra crossing” HighWaycode. But it also says “Remember that traffic does not have to stop until someone has moved onto the crossing.

So basically, if someone is waiting, but they have their foot on the crossing, they are on the crossing and the traffic must stop. Some drivers may not spot the fact that the have their foot on the crossing, in which case they are not fully paying attention.

There are also some interesting tips on how to use a Zebra Crossing from RED Driving School.

Be safe on the roads.

Road Safety – Passing Cyclists and other Road Users

I was a very keen cyclist in my younger days. I also had a pony when I was in Primary School. So I have been at the sharp end of some very bad driving.

The question is, how much space should you give a cyclist? The highway code states “leave at least 1.5 metres when overtaking cyclists at speeds of up to 30mph, and give them more space when overtaking at higher speeds” (highwaycodeuk.co.uk).

There is some good advise in this video:-

If you ask another question about horses – riders and horse drawn vehicles? The highway code states “pass horse riders and horse-drawn vehicles at speeds under 10 mph and allow at least 2 metres of space”. The important thing is that a vehicle passing quickly could scare the horse, resulting in it becoming unpredictable, which is dangerous for other traffic and the person controlling or riding the horse. Believe me, horses can be very fickle and unpredictable.

The video below shows how best to overtake a horse rider:-

Similarly for pedestrians – ” allow at least 2 metres of space and keep to a low speed when passing a pedestrian who is walking in the road (for example, where there is no pavement)”

Road Safety – Tailgating

Tailgating is one of my major bugbears. Every time I drive I see it happening and it seems to be occurring more and more frequently.

As an Advanced Driver (I passed my IAM test back in 2006), it is something that I would very much like to a lot less off.

Drivers may think that their car has good brakes and will stop in time.

The question is, how much space should you leave between yourself and the car in front?

“The Highway Code says you should ‘allow at least a two second gap between you and the vehicle in front on roads carrying faster moving traffic’. The two seconds are made up of the time needed for thinking and stopping. And when it’s raining you need to at least double that gap.” (NationalHighways.co.uk) How do you measure this two second gap. If you pick a marker at the side of the road, such as a traffic sign, or a lamp post, and if you can say “Only a fool brakes the two second rule” between the car in front passing and you passing the same marker. Watch the video below:-

So what should you do if you are in front of someone who is tailgating? Good advise from a driving instructor in this link – it tells you what not to do and why people do tailgate.

The main point of this post is that tailgating is illegal and very dangerous. Do not tailgate the car in front – it will save your braking effort, so reduce the amount of wear and tear on your vehicle.

eTrex USB Data cables GPS used by The National Trust in Wales

eTrex USB Cable

Our GPS Data Cables are being used by The National Trust in Wales to help with a Major Project. The product they used were the eTrex USB Data Cables.

Trystan Edwards of the National Trust said that they have a number of Garmin devices which are given to contractors to record work up on an important moor in Snowdonia. So our GPS cables will be well used. He also said

“Across about 13000 acres of deep peat moor, important as a carbon store, contractors have been blocking man made ditches from the 19th Century and 1960s-1980s. It’s been a big job spanning 5 years.
Every peat dam has been recorded, and they are normally about 10m apart, such that we have thousands of them across the moor, called Y Migneint.
All the dam records have been downloaded from the devices using your cables. Moving forward, the work that has been completed will allow us to develop a more integrated approach to managing the upper Conwy catchment.”

Ross Henderson, Owner of Nav-e-gate4less, said “I am delighted to hear of this project and that we were able to assist with our GPS Data Cables. The majority of our sales are to individuals and we don’t often hear of what it is that our cables are being used for. This was very interesting application of one of our products. It also shows that we offer high quality products and accordingly, a customer service to match.”

If you have an interesting story involving the use of one of our products, why not contact us with your story? We would be delighted to hear about it.
